16.4.1. Root Stress?

In verbs where applicable, occurs in all conjugations of a verb except for vós and nós. In the case of vós and nós, it does not occur in these conjugations because the stress falls on the ending, and therefore, the stem remains unchanged. In applicable verbs, this pattern applies to conjugations in the present indicative, the present subjunctive and the imperative.

Below are some considerations for root stress:

• If the word is inherited or borrowed (a borrowed word might not have the open vowel, although some borrowed words do as if they were inherited)
• If a verb’s conjugations simply stopped exhibiting the hereditary pattern (ex: “afrontar” in Spanish used to have diphthong in conjugation)
• Nasalization (French and Portuguese have nasal vowels that otherwise prevent open E in conjugations of verbs like “tentar”)
• A change in verb type (ex: -ere verb to -ire verb in some languages to varying degrees)
• A verb might not exist in a certain language at all
• In some cases, the root stress differs depending on the dialect, like in dialects of Catalan.

The root stress seen in these conjugations are generally Romance. The root stress with open vowels are mostly seen in Italian, to a slightly lesser extent in Catalan and to a lesser extent in French and Portuguese due to nasalization. Spanish uses diphthongs in stressed, open syllables that would normally correspond to open vowels in other languages. Although, there are many cases where for one reason or another, the verb's conjugation does not have a diphthong in Spanish. In the case of Romanian, similarly to Spanish, it lacks open vowels. Therefore, the concept of root stress applies the least to Romanian.

For the purpose of classification, the verbs will be divided based on if they become diphthongs in Spanish.

The verbs "loctare" (open in Italian) and "coprare" (open in Catalan) are debatable due to originally coming from verbs with closed vowels and the fact that most evolutions in Romance languages are also closed.
